Hiring is not the first answer

The instinct when the number is short is to add a person. Usually the team you have is closing a fraction of what it already touches.

A new rep costs money for two quarters before returning any, and arrives into whatever system already exists. If that system is the reason the number is short, you have just bought a second copy of the problem.

Do this first

Take the last fifty closed-lost deals and read them. Not the stage they died in — the actual reason, in a sentence, in the words of the person who was there.

You will find three or four causes accounting for most of it. They are almost never "we needed more people".

What usually turns up

  1. The deal went quiet and nobody noticed for a fortnight.
  2. The wrong person was in the room and the right one never arrived.
  3. It was never qualified and should not have been worked at all.

None of those are fixed by headcount. The third one is made worse by it.

When hiring is right

When your existing team is at genuine capacity — every rep in conversations most of the day, deals moving, nothing sitting — and the constraint is hours rather than process. That does happen. It is just much rarer than the instinct suggests, and it is testable before you spend the money.
